Doing a link is how the RedHat based distros do it. The actual binary
gets installed with the version attached (gcc3, gcc3.3, etc...) and then
a symlink is created to make it the default found by most applications.
Renaming it may have consequences for applying updates (whether by deb
or rpm) as the new version will be trying to replace or remove that
python2.4 file and not finding it. Without realising it you'll still be
trying to use 2.4 when your system has installed 2.6 (as an example).
