Subject: Re: West Side Meeting ... What Topics ... Who is Willing
Just as a suggestion, I think there's a need to attract more new users to
these meetings. One way to do that might to take a closer look at some of the
newer desktop distros aimed at the typical windows user, like MEPIS and
UBUNTU. I currently run MEPIS on my HP Laptop, and UBUNTU running on a
desktop, and I'm hard pressed to say which one I like more. Both of them are
of DEBIAN variety, fast, secure, and they are incredibly easy to load,
update, and add packages to. Even easier than windows, IMHO, (The only thing
I miss is "Clippy" reminding me I only have "X" days left to register my
software before it goes belly-up!).
I love this stuff! I've been using it exclusively for over a year now, and I
still barely know what I'm doing!
I realize the meetings are aimed at more professional users, but I think the
Pros will follow with a growing base of home, SOHO, and casual internet
users.
If you can get people interested in using *any* Linux OS, there would also be
a lot of growing interest in meetings about archiving .tar, .bz files, home
networking (which is almost automatic with MEPIS), getting xine and gmplayer
to read DVD and .wmv files, and migrating to Linux apps like Firefox, Gimp,
Blender, Open Office, and all the other types of (free) software people would
like to have on their windows machines, but cant afford to pay for.
Most of the people I talk to have an interest in trying Linux, but they're so
used to running windows they're "afraid to learn a whole new OS", or they
seem to think their computers will implode if they try out any of the Live
CDs I hand out to them. If they had a chance to learn just a little, and try
it out risk free, they might jump into it like I did.
Would this be a direction PLUG would be willing to take?
