I assume you are talking about DVD and CD *burners*. There was never
any problem with IDE CD or DVD players.

On the burner front, you used to have to use SCSI emulation for IDE CD
burners to get cdrecord and the like to recognize them. That was in
the 2.4 kernel days. With 2.6, you don't even need to do that.

So, short answer: you don't need to be careful at all.
