I don't see what you're talking about.

When Gmail started, it was a free for all for a limited time.  Once
that initial time expired, the only way to get a gmail account (which
was the only commercial web mail with a Gig of storage at the time) was
through an invite from an existing member.  Invites were like slashdot
mod points, not given on a whim.
Gmail account invites were available on ebay from people who were given
them by Google or if a friend 'invited' you to join.  Today you still
see invites listed for a couple of bucks even though they're freely
available now.
So since anybody can get a gmail account by visiting Google.com, ,
Gmail invites are meaningless.

#2 - Gmail invites was viral marketing at it's worst. It encouraged
gullible people to 'promote' the google brand and it's products on
various message bases even though it is a commercial venture which by
all rights is an effrontery to this message base. Some would call this
'list spamming.'

Craig

If it's list spamming, I didn't see it that way and didn't take offense at it.
I wanted to sign up and didn't see a way to do it. I'm glad he offered to
share his invites.

Just another POV...
