I'm still something of a noob myself, but I've been using SUsE 9.0 on my HP
Pavilion laptop and an AMD homebuilt for over a year. I bought my copy from
Fry's for $35 and YOU has always worked for me. It's my understanding that if
you want phone and e-mail tech support, you have to buy, but the updates work
with any distro. Mplayer will run DVD and wmv files on Linspire, but last
time I checked it hasn't been ported to SUsE yet. You can load pretty much
whatever other packages you want, and most Gnome and KDE apps will run under
either desktop manager. The difference between Gnome and KDE is pretty much a
matter of asthetics, and my distro came with several Gnome apps.
Not being a computer whiz, the learning curve has been pretty steep for me,
but I haven't regretted dumping windows since I made the switch. SUsE does
everything I want it to do, and I am very impressed with the stability of the
OS, which is actually part of my problem. If it doesn't break, how am I ever
going to learn how to fix it?
