Here's what I ended up doing which is a fine solution for me.
1. Added my user to the 'disk' group which gives me mount and read/write
access to the disks. I probably should create a separate 'usbdisk' group
for just the USB devices but have not done that yet.
2. With the change above my user can mount and umount the USB drives at
the command line.
3. Created new icons for the USB drives on the desktop. I did this by:
- Insert the USB drive.
- Right click on the desktop and choose: Create New -> Device -> Hard
disc device...
- On the General tab put "USB Stick" as device name.
- On the Device tab choose the associated device, in this case /dev/sb1
4. It still does not automount but I can insert the USB stick and right
click the icon, click 'Mount' and I am good to go. Right click and
'Unmount' and I can remove it.
I created a separate icon for the card reader on /dev/sda1.
So, I am good to go. Thanks for the help!
