desktop doesn't appear

I have a small problem: the nice desktop icons don't appear on my desktop.
Instead an error mesage appears saying, 'The process for the file protocol
died unexpectedly.'
I get around this by opening konqueror and going to the desktop that way.

Would someone be kind enough to tell me how to fix this?
