I see reports of getting these things (HP OfficeJets) running on Fedora
3 without anything special being downloaded and installed so I would go
slowly on this.
I would think that if you are running a distro with 2.6 kernel, it's
likely to have a new enough cups and sane to work without need to
install the software from HP as they have been working with the
developers.
As for newer/older rpms...If say, their software wants to replace cups
with a newer version, you would have to either remove all cups rpms
(ugly thought) and rpm -i (install) or better, rpm -U (update) cups
which 'should' merely update the packages cleanly.
