I was annoyed by this, too, and Ubuntu's GUI is Gnome. I did some
searching and found the Gnome Clipboard Daemon. It's a tiny program
that barely hits my processor and memory. It must hook into Gnome's
clipboard function and keep the contents itself. Just set it up to run
automatically at boot and that's it. No conf files or anothing.
(AFAIK, it does require Gnome. :)
