moin, moin,

OK, we have an east side meeting coming up this week and a west side
meeting in a couple of weeks.

OK, for the past few years I've set up the January topics to be
alternative something or another as a way to start the new year.

Some past presentations were:

alternative boxen ( PDAs, etc. )
alternative distros
alternative architectures ( CPUs )

I would like to continue that because I think it's fun.

I highly encourage the alternative presentations being audience
participation nights. People can give a short description of whatever it
is that they want to cover. We've gotten to see some really cool toys this
way.

So, we need to choose one topic and start preparing for it :).

Some 'alternatives' I can think of.

alternative formats
        Some possible alt formats:
        png
        svg
        OO.o formats
        GIMP's native format
RSS <-- is it really a format?
        dia/kivio formats

alternative browser - e.g. other than konq, moz/firebird and galeon
        maybe galeon is now alternative
        Some possible alt browsers:
                epiphany
                OO.o
                dillo
                amaya
                links
                links2
                lynx
                emacs
                w3m
                netrik

alternative info viewing
        rss feeds
auto downloaders such as dailystrips and stripclub
        gutenbrowser

alternative live CDs
might've done something like this, but I think it was just
something
in any case, it's certainly grown since it was last covered
    some possible alt LiveCDs:
gentoo, mandrake, SuSE, etc. live CDs
        LiveCDs for non-x86 architectures
        LiveX
SkoleLinux and other derivatives of Knoppix

alternative toys
        geek toys of all kinds
software packages that are fun to play with
                openuniverse
                ssystem
        blender

alternatives to devices
    Myth TV rather than VCR
    asterisk/VoIP rather than phone
Mr House vs. whatever might've done the things it does
Maybe this could be part of the toys subject

ciao,
