Are you using KDE or Gnome?

If KDE, right click on the desktop. Select Create New> Link to application.

This will open a dialog box which will enable you to select an icon and
designate the path to the program which you want to start. If you are
not sure what the path to the GIMP file may be, you can check the path
in your KDE Menu Manager.
