An excellent question, and something I meant to comment on. No, I did not do that. I have between 6 and 7 gigabytes of
user data that I copied over from my iMac to my Linus box,
including 92 files and directories with names that start with dot ('.'). I know enough to let the system create its own stuff when I'm moving to a new release of the operating system, and will move only stuff I'm sure of from the backup into the new directory.

Of course, there is always the potential for error, but in the first stage of updating the system I did only one thing that would have affected GNOME that I know of, namely to change the focus policy.

Fortunately, I discovered that the only thing I have to do to recover, i.e., get back to the login, is to kill X from a console or ssh terminal. The first three or four times I rebooted. Duhhh.

I'm working under KDE for now so I can get something done, but that's pretty time-consuming, too, since I don't want to keep that as my login environment.

Now if only I could figure out how to get the system to send out email so I don't have to use this WebMail interface ... It's coming in just fine (using fetchmail). Another problem.
