Subject: ftp problems in mandrake 10, proftpd
Pluggers,

I'm running mandrake 10 as my webserver and i thot why
not use it as an ftp server too. Up front let me say
that I have tried google.com to the best of my
abilities and have come up with nothing that fixes the
problem.

I'm using proftpd [don't know how to query the version
number of this program]
i've edited proftd.conf file to use a different port
(port 3365) because my isp(cox cable, btw they like to
block all kinds of ports)won't allow port 21. I've
picked that number out of a list that claims 3365 is
the same protocol as ftp port 21 protocol. Nothing
special about that number and I'm open to changing it.

Here is my current setup for the .conf file:
http://www.solodiver.net/proftpdconf.txt if you would
like to view it.

I can access ftp from inside my network. I'm behind a
DI 704up Dlink router and have enable the ftp server
on the web interface page. I've also set it to allow
Private use through port 21 and public through 3365.

I can access the ftp server through my user account
and that is in passive mode. In passive mode I get no
error and no directory listing at all. I suppose that
passive mode doesn't allow directory listing? i';m not
sure on that part.

I cannot access the ftp server in active mode. this is
the error that i get:

Response: 500 Illegal PORT command
Error: Could not retrieve directory listing

But note no username/pass errors.

I'm using filezilla in winxp to connect to the server
because the majority of the ppl i will allow access
will be using microsoft products and it probably
doesn't matter anyway.

After much googling i was also advised to turn ON
'DMZ' in the router.

*FYI DMZ(Demilitarized Zone) is used to allow a single
computer on the LAN to be exposed to the Internet.

obviously this is a security threat so I'm not sure
what you pluggers think of this. but it is 'enabled'
at this point.

That's all I have on this. I can tell you that IE is
not help in browsing the contents in passive and of
course errors out in active mode. I've also tried
winscp368.exe and all get basically the same errors.

My question: should I be trying to configure a file on
my mandrake server or is there something I need to do
to my router, or both, or some third thing that I'm
not yet aware of.

Thanks in advance,

Mike
