do you have mondo running on the same system all the other services
are running? can you spare an extra box to do the backups via
nfs/smb/other network mount?
i used to run amanda for backups and we had a box solely for doing
tape backups. amanda is a client-server backup system where you can
put the work (tarring, compression, etc) on the client or on the
server. we messed around with various settings because we found that
compressing large volumes of data put a lot of strain on whatever
system was doing it. if it was a dedicated backup server, it didn't
matter if it was chugging away for hours compressing a backup, but we
didn't want production servers doing all that work themselves, even if
it was off peak hours. (and we were just a small shop with 4 servers:
web, mail/file, domain, backup))
from what i gather (rather quickly) mondo seems to be client only, but
that doesn't stop you from nfs or smb mounting your backup mounts read
only on a dedicated backup server and running mondo from there.
just a thought.
