I have proceeded with Slack8. Briefly, here is how:

1. Created bare.i, color.gz and pcmcia.dsk floppies from the images.
2. Booted bare.i
3. At boot prompt entered: ramdisk floppy=thinkpad root=/dev/fd0
3.a I think the specification of root was not needed but I used it.
4. Used fdisk to create partitions 60M /boot, 24M swap and the rest as /
5. Issued the following command sequence to enable the swap:
mkswap /dev/hda2 ; swapon /dev/hda2
6. Issued the command pcmcia to load the card support
7. Issued the command setup
8. Chose stuff
9. Chose NFS Slackware source
10. Used Webmin on my main computer to setup an NFS shared directory
11. Copied the Slackware8 CD into the shared directory
12. Setup NFS source information
13. Choose Menu to select package components

I am now in the middle of this "select packages in this group, it installs
selections in the group, goto select in next group" interations. ie. It is
working. I am now in fear of running out of hard disk space before I get
done but we shall see. I can always start again now that I know of one way
to get it going.

Thanks for the helps and hints. I'll worry about Slack10 or some other distro
possibility another day.

Alan
