Charlie,
As others have pointed out, professional data recovery is EX$PEN$IVE. Although the drive won't boot I wonder if all/most of the data would be accessible if you booted from a KNOPPIX CD.
S.M.A.R.T. (if turned on) is designed as an early warning system for failing drives and by default places warnings in /var/log/messages.
