I've done it many times, and initially I would assume possibly because you
installed or booted using a bare.i kernel and default VMWare uses a scsi
drive, so slack isn't seeing it? Or lilo didn't install correctly because it
was a scsi drive?

Did you explicity use a ide drive for the install, or a scsi.s kernel?
