Subject: execute permissions

This is differant. I couldn't drag and drop a file to the floppy so I ls -l
that file (1) Well the permissions were (help me out here) 311 So I was
thinking that since I'm the owner and have write permessions and I should be
able to drag -n-drop to the floppy drive. But it wasn't until I had changed
the permissions to 700 (adding the execute bit) (2) that I was able to
drag-n-drop. Why is that? It would seem that that I would nead write
permissions rather than execute. Is it perhaps because this is a device and
to make it run you need execute permissions and you would need write to allow
data to transfer from the computer to the device? If that is the case could
this possibly be why some printers don't work?
