fakeroot

While I appreciate the advise of not using sudo for everything that I think
needs root permissions how could I get around that? I do not think fakeroot
will work. It seems only to be for building packages. For instance, I open
gtkam to view digital picture and it appears I need root permnissions.
Fakeroot doesn't work; or is there a way to get it to?
