I kind of thought switches were for the most part indifferent to any
addresses used, creating the physical connection. After identifying the
network, ip and broadcast address for the connected MAC's, it would
filter the traffic and permit broadcasts and traffic that pertained to
the available connections.

Thus, once you plug a NIC into a switch, it should display a link light
at both ends of the connection. Once link is done, you are connected to
the switch and it will adapt to any addressing scheme you use.
