You sell $30,000 of server equipment to the CDC, General Dynamics,
Honeywell, Motorola, etc... they're going to want vendor support. $1000
and unlimited user licenses beats the pants off $795 + $200 per user AND
that comes with phone support. $1000 is chump change for the cost of
business.
Now if Joe Dude wants to have a business of "Debian Support AZ" and be
held accountable for patches, updates, and upgrades, that's up to
whoever purchases the $30,000 server equipment.
If they decide to buy another server set of $30,000 and send it to
Maryland, is "Debian Support AZ" going to provide support for in
Maryland for free or for fee?
The reality is that Big Company will buy the servers, buy the software,
and pay Joe Dude to make sure it is installed correctly.
They will always go to Joe Dude first for problems. What they don't want
is Joe Dude to become Joe Sombodyelse and not have the softtware vendor
to fall back on.
$1000 is nothing to those who pay it. $1000 is alot to Mom and Pop stores.
Business owners already buy/lease copiers and pay copier techs to come
out and do repairs.
