Bill,

I added the following lines (per http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-basico.en.html) to /etc/apt/sources.list before the "deb cdrom:" stuff.:

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
     deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free
     deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free

apt-get update seems to have worked.

apt-get install openoffice.org fails with:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package open

Googled "debian" then within that "openoffice.org".

I added the following lines (per http://www.linux-debian.de/openoffice/mirrors.html) to /etc/apt/sources.list before the "deb cdrom:" stuff.:

     deb http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/ftp.vpn-junkies.de/openoffice/ woody main contrib

apt-get update seems to have worked.

apt-get install openoffice.org failed again.

apt-get install emacs also fails with:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package emacs has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and
never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list.
E: Package emacs has no installation candidate

apt-get install wine worked

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

George
