each browser is different.

typically, a site offers a certificate and your browser looks at the CA
offering the certificate and if your browser accepts the authority of
the CA and verifies the certificate with the CA, you are not alerted at
all. On mozilla (presumably Netscape too) you can 'inspect' the
certificate by clicking directly on the lock at the bottom right of the
window.

You can also check the certificates/authorities in Mozilla - edit menu /
preferences -> Privacy & Security / Certificates -> Manage Certificates
