chmod changes the access permissions to the file.

drw-rw-rw-    3 bmike1   bmike1       4096 2004-05-11 22:20 documents

According to this, no one, neither world nor group (bmike1 right column)
nor owner (bmike1 left column) have permission to cd into a directory.
'chmod +x documents' will grant permisson to all three, world, group, and
owner, to cd in.
