All,
Maricopa County has decided to replace it's current budget and planning
system Cognos[0] with something written internal. The new system will be
written using Free Software(Python/GNU Enterprise) using Free Software
infrastructure (Postgresql/GNU/Linux). The desire is to release the end
product under a Free Software license and offer to additional
municipalities as a solution for budget and planning that currently is not
being adequately met by propietary software vendors.
I know that many people are interested in governments adopting Free
Software. Now is your chance to help make that a reality. We need to be
able to run systems in parallel, however because of limited resources it
is will be difficult to keep the existing system moving forward while
architecting a new system.
We could use some help advancing the models of the old system so we can
focus efforts on the development of a new system. We are looking for
volunteers (as we have no real budget) that maybe interested in such work.
Cognos is a leading private sector planning tool, by volunteering you
will get experience using Cognos on a deep enough level that you could use
that education for entrance into the work force. You will also get an
understanding of government financial structures and operations such as
fund accounting and governmental planning.
The work will largely be grunt work in cloning existing models, but will
be valuable experience. Currently because of data security concerns we
can not offer remote volunteers. The work will have to be perfomed
downtown at 4th Avenue and Jefferson. Monday - Friday between 7am - 6pm.
