They are Unicode characters that are not supported by your font.
Depending on what fonts people are using they probably saw a different
number of 'cards' in the characters you sent. I got 4. The numbers on
there are specifying which character is supposed to be there.
For more information on this I'd recommend looking at the GNOME Unicode
Character Map. You can look through all the Unicode characters for a
given font.
