All -
Thought you'all would be interested to know that the first batch of PC's will
be going to the school tomorrow :-) I found a batch of power supplies at the
Boy Scout swap meet which got me going....
After experimenting with Damn Small Linux and Morphix I ended up loading
Mandrake 9.2. As it turned out there was a perfectly good, empty, 2 Gig
partition for me to install onto. I stripped Mandrake of almost all the
packages and loaded it on the second partition. And I found that the
performance was actually not bad -- as you may recall these are IBM E600
laptops with only 32Meg of memory. Bootup is painfully slow (~4.5 minutes to
the desktop), but once you get into KWrite or KTouch (the thing I really
wanted) there is no noticeable delay.
So with a customized background and desktop to keep things simple, this has
turned out to be a pretty sweet solution. Light years better than typing on a
dead computer. Anyway, chalk up another win for open source :-)
And thanks again to all on the list for the great suggestions.
Jeff
