Ok, xdm is irrelevant if you cannot start X so we won't worry about
that, granted it may prove to be a symptom of the problem.
When you say startx failed what do you mean?
Do you have an XFree86.0.log in /var/log that you can send us?
Too bad this didn't happen before the Stammtisch on Tuesday.
