You are correct as well. The effective distance is increased however,
and the image/sound recv'd will be the exact same 1 foot from the tower
as it will be 100 miles (random numbers), or until your recv'r can no
longer differentiate between the 1 and 0 bit in the signal.
DTV is basically an 18MBit broadband broadcast on each frequency. Both
FCC and the stations are in favour of it because of the other reason you
pointed out, a station can have 4x as much programming while paying for
a single channel, thereby allowing a greater range in content without
needing more individual stations.
There is also the benefit that because the broadcast is actually an MPEG
data stream, it can be encrypted using any encryption whoever may want
to use so that only specific individual receivers can decode the
transmission. Possible use: .Gov sending top secret message to all
agents in U.S. via pre-established, public means. OR... Something like
cable service.
