I have a suggestion - it may clear up some other problems as well.
Let's say that your login name is bmike
log out of all sessions
if you log in via GDM (graphic user interface login)
press Control-Alt-F2 to get a text based virtual console
log in as root with root password
Then assuming that your login name is bmike and your $HOME directory is
/home/bmike...
chown bmike.bmike /home/bmike -R
(this makes you the owner of all files and folders in your home
directory)
log out
Press Alt-F7
you are back to your gui login and login as normal
