Many Apple PowerBooks have a 100-250v 50/60Hz power supply/brick on a
leash setup. Probably a bunch of other manufacturers do too.

I would suppose that the reason that they don't build the ac/dc
converter into the laptops anymore is to keep the weight & heat out of
the laptop itself.
