Change default working directory?

If you look in the passwd file, the last entry on each line is the shell
setting. At the front of the shell path is a ":". The entry in front of the
":" is the home directory. Change this and the user will be placed in that
directory and it will become the default directory. Remember that this
directory must exist before the login.

How do I change the default working directory, i.e., the one that bash
defaults to when I boot? It is now currently defaulted to my home
directory, but I would like it to default to another.

I am using bash and cygwin. I realize this is not a cywin list, but I
thought the answer would be the same nonetheless.
