I have an Epson that behaves weirdly like that whenever you disturb it
by doing something like changing an ink cartridge. The ritual that
cures it goes like this:

1) Power down the printer
2) Log out all users
3) Log back in as anyone
4) Power up the printer

I have no clear idea why that works or even how I discovered that it
works, but it never fails. I hope it works for you.
