Debian apt question

I am interested in finding out exactley how apt keeps track of dependencies.
How does it know what packages need what? Where can I find that information?
I've read just about everything on the debain site, but can't find any
specific docs pertainging to indepth knowledge of how apt works.

Do I need to just download the source and view it? Or does someone know of a
white paper or something?
