Subject: Peoria Schools can't afford to replace stolen computers
Hans,

I am not familiar with "LTSP-like" but I can setup an LTSP box (static IP).

For 9 clients, a 800 MHz Pentium class box with 512 MEG ram (might squeak by
with less) and 60 Gig Hard Drive should server well. Anyone got one of
those who is willing do part with it. We can always add memory.

I am experienced with Etherboot NIC's. They can boot from a floppy (cheesy)
or from a ROM chip onboard the NIC.

If the school has a non-Linux DHCP server (and I think it probably does) we
will need to deal with the ROM chip to configure them to ignore the
not-Linux DHCP. With floppies (cheesy) this is a piece of cake. With ROM
chips, we will need someone with a ROM burner (that is on my wish list).

One thing, my experience shows that GNOME has (or at least had) a memory
leak with LTSP. I had to convert the LTSP system to KDE. No flames please.

Other question. Will a server scheme work. Is there an Ethernet in place?
Is there cabling in place? Can the boxen(s) be located close to each other
such that a hub will work?

Also. I bought a 16 port Hub (not switch) at a thrift shop (can't resist a
bargain) the other day that I could donate.

Anyone got an 800 MHx box around (or do they)???

Anyone got a 60 GIG Dirve to donate (or do they)?

In short, if we can come up with the box, I will volunteer to set up the
server. Will want help with the clients. Clients are the easy part.

George
