Jpeg creates noise and speckles around clean graphix, while .png doesn't
support animation, at least I've never been able to create an animated
.png.

Yes, .gif, of course, would work in that it would display properly on
the web page. However, most graphic design tools can save in jpg or png
just a easily so why not use the truely free formats instead?
