Software suspend works nicely to hibernate a machine. Well, it works on
my machine. http://swsusp.sourceforge.net

I don't use the power button to hibernate ... but that could probably be
arranged. Oh BTW you have to patch your kernel or use a 2.5.6something
or higher kernel.
