Do you have a "switchdesk" command line tool?

Did you look at the .Xclients script?

Anyways, you can probably attempt to force this to work for you by making
your .Xclients, .xinitrc, or .xsession run "startkde". (Use whatever is
appropriate for your setup. This should be discussed in detail in this
list's archives.)
