common misconception on bzImage is that it uses the bzip compression.
This is not true. The basics is that instead of uncompressing the
kernel in low memory it does it into high or extended (I forget exactly)
memory due to the size restrictions.
having bzip installed will not affect a kernel compile. I don't know
what it may be that gives that problem though.
