A BIG part of the reason that most (all?) tape backup is difficult to work
with is because tape media is difficult to work with. As one that has
written "tape" code that is on the inside of a a "tape" drive, the protocol
and operation of tape media is simply a pain in the (name you favorite
painful place)!
Random access is far superior to any sequential media, IMO.
