The true solution is to replace NIS with something like LDAP :).

Get NIS to also share /etc/shadow. Look at the man page for shadow to see
how to support requiring passwd changes.

'login' will likely need to call 'passwd' from NIS rather than the normal
system 'passwd'. I think that needs to be configged in PAM.
