The .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov, and .mil domains are supposedly generic
domains that describe a TYPE of domain, not a location. In reality, most of
of those domains are U.S. based.

The .us and .ws domains are examples of country-specific domain (for the
United States and Western Samoa, respectively). All countries have a two
letter domain that is theirs to do with as they please. Some countries are
pretty strict about who they give their domains to and some aren't (.cx, .to,
and .tv come to mind).
