don't be so hard on yourself, you did very well. Who was to know that
the way these cable modems are configured, you have to hard reset (power
off for about 5 minutes) to get it to allow you to change
computers/devices?

As for netmasks/ip addresses. Cox (and probably most cable modem & dsl
providers) try to conserve ip addresses and routing table configurations
by providing shared bandwidth and having multiple setups go through the
same gateway. If you need multiple ip addresses, you have to purchase
them as they would typically only give you one address.

It was interesting how they gave you a very small subnet mask (meaning
less computers on the same bandwidth). Consider yourself fortunate.
