Are you sure it's 2.2.20 for a server? Unless you're running a 2.2
series for the iptables thing, i would recommend the latest 2.4 series.
To the question, it sounds like you missed something in file system
support, perhaps YOUR filesystem. To get back, just select the lilo/grub
entry for your previous kernel. You id make a backup, didn't you? Always
keep your old kernel until you know your new one works right. Say you
buy a new car and sell your old one at the very same time. Now say your
new car doesn't work, how do you get back to the dealer with no tow
truck?
In short, if you didn't make a backup, you're almost completely screwed
unless you can/do re-install which puts your old kernel back. And,
always keep your old kernels, at least until you know the new one works.
I personally have a copy of every single kernel I've compiled and boot
entries for each with descriptions of what I changed.
