in my experience, 'LI' means that lilo has a problem seein the
boot images. (Happens to me when I run vmware with drives disabled).

hmm. reading the rest of your comments seems to imply that you
made a boot partition starting at the lowest possible location
on the disk (and made it, what, less than 100 meg ;-), so lilo should
be able to see it.

what does lilo say when you run it at the command line?
