May as well wrap up my own post with the results:

problem 1 was resolved by uninstalling libwrapguile1 and reinstalling
gnucash. Not sure why that worked, but it did.

#2 was easy: I just 'cp /dev/null /etc/init.d/slapd' and the
uninstall went without a hitch. Since my database were hosed,
the uninstall process was choking on the stoping of the service.

With the exception of chmod'ing a couple devices for sound,
and the above, everything went without a hitch.
