No frame usually means no window manager.

I assume you are in some fail-safe mode (where only an xterm is started,
probably because no window manager is available).

You can still attempt to start your window manager by running it from that
terminal window.

You can't run startx (with defaults) because X is already running.

See if you have "startkde" (or "gnome-session").

Also, look at your ~/.xsession file.
