X11 programming question

Hello all:

Forgive me for posting this here. I don't see much traffic on the
developer's list - unless I'm not subscribed correcty or something. :-)

I'm looking for a programmatic way to determine if there's an icon selected
on the desktop and, if so, what it is. I'd expect the desktop window to have
an X11 atom with this information, but I can't
find one.
