Speaking of WOL, is there any way to get a WOL nic working on a
motherboard which does not have a WOL connection? I heard some used rom
chips built into the nic rather than wires.

I don't even know what wol is so i suppose not.
Problems with the power supply is what I initially thought as well. It
is about four years old.

Almost sounds like a faulty power supply, possible faulty power switch.
How old is the power supply?
I'm not sure you can do this in linux, but do you have WOL (Wake on
LAN)?
