Digital Camera help

I thought this was a simple thing from what I've heard and what I've
read in various articles about Linux and digital cameras.

I bought a mass storage USB reader for my new camera that uses memory
sticks. It is not plug and play as many articles had me believe.
Runing RH8 ( and want to change, had problems with Debian X11 setup so
I went back but that another topic.)

How do I access the files (images)? gtkam doesn't recognize it
